I agree with Ncholas.
Technology publishing platforms have reduced the costs for start-ups.
I also think tools like Salesforce.com or even sugarCRM have made a big difference.

Nic, I agree entirely.

At a basic level, my blog (www.gamesbrief.com) which I use as a business in its own right and as a marketing tool for my consultancy is entirely built on other people's technology. I use WordPress, Feedburner, OpenX, AdSense, Google Search, Twitter, Disqus and Facebook Fan Pages. All of which are free and all of which enable me to run a niche content site around all of my other commitments.

Just imagine what I could do if I did nothing else but innovate on the website...
