A new low in Twitter spam

Check out this post for a detailed description of how Guy Kawasaki’s startup Alltop has taken Twitter spam to a whole new level.  By enticing 450 people to sign up to retweet Alltop news he reached their 140,000 followers with what sounds like lots of messages.

If left unchecked this sort of thing could wreck Twitter in the way that email spam ruined Hotmail.  Whilst it is always possible to unfollow people who are complicit in this activity if it happens too much the danger is that people choose instead to simply look less often at Twitter.

  • Agreed, although as soon as a service such as this comes out there is often a nice person who writes a script which deletes the unwanted messages. I would guess however that the average user could have trouble doing this unless it is very easy to do..
