I'm a newbie in the UK entrepreneurial scene and being in San Francisco for the Web 2.0 Expo made at least one thing crystal clear. They have a different approach to startups and entrepreneurship in general.
Different doesn't mean better or worse... it's just different. I think that the real value is still in ideas and to be honest I'm sick of reading about flickr-like, facebook-like, everything-like startups. Most of internet niches (larger or smaller) offer room for a lot of players, but what I feel is that we need ideas really new and, hopefully, disruptive.
If you git that idea UK, US or anywhere else doesn't make a real difference.

Cheers,
Fabio

Great post, thank you.

I would also add that one of the reasons for looking at things negatively in the UK is because most people who's been through the last dot com (and what followed) have a lot of first-hand examples "why it didn't work" and virtually nothing for "how it did".

Hence, everyone can share their experience on why what you (an entrepreneur) are doing is going to be difficult and only a few can help to see how it can actually work.

Love your CAPTCHAs btw ;)

Nic:

Thanks for an interesting article on how things are different in the world of VC across the Big Pond. You and your readership might be interested in more information on innovation, venture capital, and small business at:

***HUGE MISTAKE ABOVE***

What I said was people were negative about Twitter at the Geek dinner. We didn't talk about Mahalo.com at the Geek dinner!!!

So, this was nothing personal like you're saying it was! This was objective feedback from someone who's been there... and i think you would agree that the UK and Europe is very, very negative when it comes to startups.

Really needs to change in my mind or Europe will keep losing great startups to the Valley.
