I do believe that virtual worlds is the next evolution for social networking. Social networking is also already becoming a ubiquitous feature on the web. The traction, gravitational pull, and viral aspect of social networking is what makes it essential for socializing and general public relations. The bugs, kinks, and interface issues will all be worked out once a well-funded, strategically conscious social network starts to make avatar interaction a major part of their scalability efforts. I'm presently tweaking with my blog, but by the time you read this comment I should have a new blog up with a few comments (including one long essay, I re-edited after the You Tube-Google Deal was announced) that discuss social networking and virtual worlds.

NIc,

I think you can also extend it the other way via ARG's like Perplex City through to the Augmented Reality being experimented with ay MIT Media lab awhile back - see here for some of it.

However, first it has to work - reliably. I have blogged about my sad experience with Habbo this afternoon here in Habbo Hostile
