I would have to disagree. I can see where your coming from but Web 3.0, I believe, is going to be more about functionality and marriage of technologies than the environment you interface through. Virtual worlds serve a purpose but they are limited. I find SecondLife so very dull. All that virtual navigation and avator stuff is entertainment. I want Web3.0 to improve my life not give me a Second one. I have some thoughts on the subject check it out on my blog post (basically I belive mobile will be the platform that pushes the Web forward to 3.0:

Don't buy the Second Life hype. Their numbers are constantly overstated and exaggerated.

I don't expect web 3.D to occur anytime soon...the virtual world crowd is still stuck in the mid 90's. I get the feeling they don't really know what they are doing and just stumble around harking the same pitch about how cool avatars are and virtual shopping.

The real innovations on the tech side of immersive worlds will come from the game industry, but most of the MMORPG designers out there still don't understand the whole social aspect of the internet. Most new MMORPGs are more like single player games with a networking component than a virtual world.

I'd be happy to share my thoughts and some rants about the industry's blind gropings...the future will eventually get here, but not until the currently established players stop meandering around with the status quo and some new ideas/innovations are brought to the fore.

Nic,

I think Web 3.0 will actually be Web 3D.

Imho 2nd Life is partly a "Web 2.0" story - user generated content, social networks, webservice based, but it has two non Web 2.0 principles - its not yet an "open" system, and at present you can't use the metadata - but I understand this will change.

Its also not (yet) ad supported and uses a subscription model. It will be interesting to see if it levies a corporate tax on the advertisers rushing in :)

Main thing is though that you interact in a 3D, fully contextual world.

I've written up my impressions of the "My So Called 2nd Life" session and related thoughts <a href="http://broadstuff.com/archives/37-My-2nd-Life-on-Web-3.D.html" rel="nofollow">here</a>

Nic,

I was using Second Life about 12 months ago, I used it for about 3 months, got bored of it and left. To do anything more than fly around aimlessly requires more than 10 mintues tech expertise. There is some blatant bandwagon jumping by brands looking to get into Second Life. It's all a bit too obvious for me.

Not sure on the link you are making between Second Life and social networks - one of the most exciting things about the like of myspace and bebo are the simplicity of getting involved and the almost viral nature of bringing friends onboard. That's not so easy with Second Life. Credit Card registration, the idea you just drop in and have no real structure as to where to go, etc.

More importantly the single most exciting thing to happen to social networks in the next 12-18 months will be mobile - trying to replicate anything like Second Life on mobile will be very, very difficult.
